In our current age that is dominated by a digital culture, many structures that have held firm in the past have been recently put to the test. Copyright is an institution focused on licensing that has been around since its first use in the Copyright Act of 1790. With the dawn of the internet and its ability to share information, Copyrights have now seen new challenges and limitations. The old fall back of covering your intellectual property with a Copyright is becoming archaic and is stifling the creativity of people that may be able to use it. In this digital age, the debates over creativity have reached a boiling point. Issues with how products can and cannot be used are making it hard to develop anythings new or creative. Due to this, and many other issues surrounding the internet, copyrights have had to transform into new ways of protecting your intellectual property. This transformation has given birth to Creative Commons which is a website that provides a service founded in the base laws of Copyrights, but that allows the creator to decide how their product can be used and provides less limitations than Copyrights. The future holds many more debates and issues that will surely arise surrounding licensing our own creations, but the present currently has their hands full with the ones they are dealing with now. This paper will hope to look into the history of Copyrights and their eventual evolution into Creative Commons and their affect on creativity in the digital age.
