Code & Art

by shauser

In the history of art some of the most beautiful paintings and productions contain code (such as the golden ratio) that is said to be a key element to producing a beautiful piece of art.
In the postmodern world where art forms, such as painting, often rejects the necessity of mathematical proportion and elegance, is there a place for this mathematical elegance?
In my paper I will argue that this beauty has found its way into the code of computers. While the code does not necessarily contain beauty within itself, it is the precision and exacting nature of the code that is the genesis of beauty in an art work. In the paper I will look at multiple forms of postmodern art that take advantage of computer code to render art works.
