a. Code and identity are closely linked due the need for Code to protect identity

II. Why Code is needed to protect identity
a. Identity can mean national identity
i. Because national identity is so important code has been used to protect the power that accompanies strong national identity
ii. Examples of espionage (protection and accumulation of identity secrets)
iii. Wars/ expansion/ religion
III. The History of Code and Identity
a. The printing press
i. The beginning of the printing press began the expansion of identity; without this other means of identity expression (internet) would not be possible
ii. Makes ideas readily available and accessible to many
IV. Literature and Identity
a. Ovid, “the Art of Love”
i. This particular work explains that understanding the identity of another is an excellent way to gain advantage in a person’s lifetime.
ii. Men must use deception and lure women because women are dangerous if they are aware of their innate sexual identity
iii. Sexuality identity of a woman threatens men so they must equip themselves with the tools necessary to combat these powers
b. British Novels
i. In the British novel period the idea of identity began to change.
1. Women, books, nature
ii. Sublime
1. The idea of the sublime in literature was used to explain the importance of maintaining an identity with nature.
2. Technology was seen as bad because it took away from the relationship with nature and identity
iii. Austen
1. Austen’s heroines become more and more aware of their own identity (very different than the heroines in stories of the past)
2. Heroines are more concerned with education, books etc. These are important components in gaining identity because education ultimately helps form identity.
V. Modern Day relationships between Code and Identity
a. Twitter, Facebook, Blogs
i. How these websites have become platforms for people to explore their identity
ii. Is your blog/facebook/twitter identity your real identity? It is easy to hide behind a computer and use these websites as a platform; does this translate to real life?
b. Credit Card/ Identity Theft
i. Identity theft is a huge problem in today’s society. People are constantly in fear of losing their identity.
ii. Loss of identity today can cause trouble in several aspects of a person’s life
